SCIATICA AFFECTS MILLIONS OF PEOPLE

Sciatica affects millions of people every year, and it can range from a minor nuisance to a debilitating problem. Even though it is a common occurrence, there is still a lot of confusion about sciatica. Often people believe sciatica is a diagnosis, however sciatica is actually a set of symptoms for what is causing the pain. The actual diagnosis and focus for treatment would be whatever problem is actually causing the sciatic nerve compression and pain. The most common causes are from a herniated disc, bulging disc, bone spur on the spine, degenerative disc disease or narrowing of the spine. Any of those conditions can cause pressure on the sciatic nerve resulting in pain, inflammation or numbness.

SCIATICA PAIN

Many people confuse sciatica with general  back pain. However, sciatica is not just limited to the back. The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttocks, and down the legs, ending just below the knee. The pain from sciatica can occur almost anywhere along the nerve pathway from your low back to your buttock and the back of your thigh and calf. The pain can vary widely, from a mild ache to a sharp, burning sensation or severe pain.

The discomfort may begin abruptly or gradually. It can sometimes feel like a sharp, shooting, jolt or electric shock. It can be worse when you cough or sneeze or move. Sitting for a long time can also intensify your symptoms. Some people also have numbness, tingling or muscle weakness in the affected leg or foot.

SCIATICA TREATMENT

Sciatica pain may occur evenly along the back and through the leg but often there are certain spots where pain is more severe. For severe or ongoing flare-ups of sciatic nerve pain, the condition needs to be treated so it does not get worse over time. As a result of the many conditions that can compress nerve roots and cause sciatica, one person’s treatment options may be very different than those of another.

People are best helped by a treatment plan that is individualized based on the specific symptoms, diagnosis and response to various treatments. Spinal discs are rubbery pads between the vertebrae, the specialized bones that make up the spinal column. Each disc is a flat, circular capsule about an inch in diameter and one-quarter inch thick.

A cervical herniated disc is caused when the inner core of a disc in the spine or neck pushes out of the disc and presses on a nerve root next to it. This may be a result from a trauma or neck injury, but the symptoms commonly start spur-of-the moment.

A herniated disc in the neck can cause a many symptoms in the neck, shoulder, arm, hands and fingers, as well as parts of the shoulder.
