5 TRUTHS ABOUT WHIPLASH!

5 TRUTHS ABOUT WHIPLASH!

WHIPLASH IS ONE OF THE MOST NEGLECTED AND MISUNDERSTOOD CONDITIONS.

Whiplash injuries are serious health concerns for anyone involved in an auto accident. Whiplash occurs when the head suddenly snaps forward, then backward, and over stretches the joints, muscles and ligaments of the neck and upper back.

Here are five truths about whiplash that you need to know!

1) SYMPTOMS ARE COMPLEX AND NOT ALWAYS IMMEDIATE.

  • Symptoms may occur right away but often do not start until several hours after the incident and then worsen over the next 24 to 48 hours.
  • Symptoms may clear up within a few days or weeks. For others, the recovery can take months or even years.
  • About 25% of people with whiplash report chronic symptoms for up to a year and can even revert back to where the pain began until the body is free of all dysfunction.
  • If left untreated, more serious problems such as permanent disc and joint damage may occur resulting in painful lifelong arthritis.

2) PAIN IS NOT THE ONLY SYMPTOM.

Pain in the neck, back, arms and shoulders is the most common symptom due to a whiplash injury. But you can also get:

  • headaches
  • dizziness
  • blurred vision
  • tingling or numbness
  • memory loss or difficulty concentrating
  • nervousness or irritability
  • difficulty sleeping
  • fatigue
  • burning or prickling,
  • depression
  • vertigo

3) IT DOESN’T TAKE A LOT OF FORCE TO GET WHIPLASH.

  • Whiplash Injuries may occur at speeds less than 5 – 10 mph. It’s hard to believe that at such slow speeds your body may become injured.
  • Research shows that 29% of people developed symptoms related to whiplash at speeds of just 2.5mph.
  • Often, the severity of the injury typically depends on whether or not you were proper restrained in the vehicle.

4) DURATION OF TREATMENT IS HEAVILY RESEARCHED.

  • Many studies have been done to determine how long treatment should last for a whiplash injury.
  • Research consensus shows that any whiplash injury that resolves within 3 months is a “mild” injury. These cases are usually healed without any residual impairments or pain.
  • Anything longer than 3 months is a “moderate to severe” injury that probably involves extensive damage, especially to the discs or joint surfaces of the spine.
  • About 25% of whiplash victims suffer chronic pain and typically do not spontaneously heal, but may improve over a period of 2 years.
  • Research shows that the average treatment period for whiplash type injuries is 7 months.

5) CHIROPRACTIC TREATMENT IS EXTREMELY EFFECTIVE FOR WHIPLASH INJURIES.

  • It’s recommended that anyone injured in a car accident receive an exam by a chiropractor as soon as possible.
  • It is necessary to treat the cause of the problem rather than just the pain symptoms. Medications provide temporary relief, but they cannot put the spine back where it belongs.  The spine is like a machine with moving parts. If the parts don’t fit together right, they will wear out very quickly. Spinal degeneration, osteoarthritis and other problems can then develop over time.
  • With treatment to the spine right after the whiplash injury, there will not be long term degeneration and other lingering effects. Chiropractic treatment achieves excellent results by correcting damage caused by the accident primarily using spinal adjustments to restore proper joint movement, physical therapy and other therapies to help speed healing of the injuries.

GET MOVING AFTER WHIPLASH!

GET MOVING AFTER WHIPLASH!

Whiplash injury affects millions each year and is the most common injury resulting from auto accidents.  If you’ve been in a car accident and are experiencing symptoms of whiplash, you can get moving again. While reducing your pain is a key objective of chiropractic, so is safely helping you restore your overall mobility and strength.

At Hummel Chiropractic, we specialize in helping auto injury patients with all different levels of pain and trauma from auto accidents. Here are some key approaches we use for diagnosing and treating whiplash.

  1. Understanding what hurts and why: Initial Exam

Before performing any treatment for whiplash, it’s important for us to understand what happened and how it’s impacted you so far. Giving details about symptoms you’ve noticed since the auto incident will help us with the diagnosis. Then we preform an exam to evaluate range of motion, joint mobility and stability, and nervous system function. We also evaluate soft tissue for indications of strains or sprains and rule out serious injury.

  1. Identifying dangers: x-rays and MRIs

If it appears that the whiplash incident may have compromised the stability in one or more of your neck joints, we will take x-rays of your neck. These x-rays are important for determining which treatment options will be safest and most effective for your particular situation. We may request an MRI to further evaluate the injury.

  1. Speeding relief and healing: Hot packs, Electrotherapy and Ice

Much of your pain from whiplash can be related to intense tightness between muscle and connective tissues. We may use electrotherapy and hot packs to reduce muscle spasms and inflammation from the injured area. While hot packs are good for reducing muscle spasms, heat placed on an inflamed joint can increase pain and inflammation. That is why hot packs are used in conjunction with electrotherapy (an inflammation reducer) and why at home we strongly recommend using ice on the inflamed area instead of heat.

  1. Restoring proper motion: adjustments

If one or more of your joints are not moving properly, we may perform a spinal manipulation or adjustment to help restore proper motion. In addition to helping you move more normally again, adjustments can also help reduce pain and improve mobility.

  1. Regaining strength: rehabilitation exercises

As with any injury, rehabilitation exercises and spinal decompression are important for your best recovery. We will prescribe stretches and exercises that are designed to restore and maintain flexibility, mobility and strength. Also, spinal decompression in the neck is essential. This therapy applies a repetitive pull and release to the neck allowing the vertebral discs to absorb water and restore the proper curve in the neck and strengthen ligaments.  Rehab exercises and spinal decompression also help prevent further flare-ups of your condition.

Hummel Chiropractic makes the process simple for you, and we have the treatment and rehabilitation program for these types of auto injuries. Call Hummel Chiropractic for a consultation, evaluation and treatment at 314.838.8780.

Each year, whiplash affects millions of Americans. It occurs when the head suddenly snaps forward, then backward, and over stretches the joints, muscles and ligaments of the neck and upper back. Here are five facts about whiplash that you may not know about, but should!

2) SYMPTOMS MAY SHOW UP DAYS LATER AND CAN LAST MUCH LONGER.

  • Symptoms may occur right away but often do not begin to develop for several hours after the incident and then worsen over the next 24 to 48 hours.
  • Symptoms may clear up within a few days or weeks. For others, the recovery can take up to three months.
  • About 25 % of people with whiplash report symptoms for up to a year.
  • About 10 % of patients report permanent symptoms as a result of their injuries.

  • A 10 mph rear end collision can produce up to 9 G’s of force in your neck.

4) X-RAYS USUALLY DON’T INDICATE A FRACTURE.

  • Advancements in seat and headrest design have helped to diminish the number of serious head and neck injuries resulting from rear-end collisions.
  • Although x-rays are usually negative for fractures of the cervical spine, a common finding is a straightening of the cervical curve.
  • This can be due to persistent muscle spasm and is usually associated with pain.
  • Have a trained medical professional exam you after an accident and decide if X-rays are indicated.

5) YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE IN A CAR TO GET WHIPLASH.

Although whiplash is associated with driving, it can also be caused by injuries other than car accidents such as:
